Red meat is not having a good month. News broke last week that the USDA is purchasing 7 million pounds of beef containing what some call "pink slime," a filler that consists of beef scraps and tissue treated with ammonium hydroxide. A mom and food columnist started a petition to ban the product from the National School Lunch Program and now has 170,000 signatures. Since the affected meat isn't labeled, the slime could be anywhere (it's already in dog food). 

Here's more bad news for red meat lovers: Even unprocessed steak can increase your risk of premature death, according to a new study. "For instance, adding just one 3-ounce serving of unprocessed red meat—picture a piece of steak no bigger than a deck of cards—to one's daily diet was associated with a 13% greater chance of dying during the course of the study," reports the Los Angeles Times. At least it doesn't say anything about the occasional great steak as an indulgence. After all, we're approaching grilling season.
