Watch: René Redzepi Reveals the Original Speech He Wrote for Winning World's Best Restaurant

When Copenhagen’s Noma first rose to fame as the world’s No. 1 restaurant on San Pellegrino’s annual list of the 50 best, chef-innovator René Redzepi wrote a speech that he decided not to read while facing some of the world’s most respected chefs, including Thomas Keller and Ferran Adrià. Well, last night when accepting the honor for the third time (Noma first won in 2010, then in 2012), he didn't hold back.

Over the course of six minutes, watch as Redzepi explains his “Woody Allen complex,” calls his team “geeks in a class of fine linens” and recalls the insult “seal fuckers.”

The full list of winners is online, with the highest placements for American restaurants going to New York’s Eleven Madison Park (No. 4) and Chicago’s Alinea from F&W Chef-in-Residence Grant Achatz (No. 9). Eric Ripert’s Le Bernandin in NYC ranked at 21, Per Se at 30, Daniel at 40, the French Laundry at 44 and Daniel Patterson’s Coi at 49. Three of the top 10 spots went to Spain.
