Here, wine experts reveal their favorite bottles costing less than $17. Many of the selections are lesser known but absolutely worth the search.

Who: Gregory Cantu, general manager/wine director at Grüner and Kask in Portland, Oregon

The Wine: 2011 Meßmer Scheurebe

Why: “This is an everyone-everyday wine,” says Cantu. Scheurebe (shoy-ray-beh) is a lesser-known varietal, often grown in Austria and Germany, and this one from Meßmer (pronounced mess-mer) is especially versatile with food. “It smells clean and minerally. On the palate, it just flirts with the idea of going sweet but shifts gracefully and heads back toward dry,” Cantu says. “On the finish, you get a subtle brininess, which I believe to be a ploy to make you drink some more.”
