Will Raw Horse Ice Cream Be the Next Chunky Monkey?

© Augusto Costanzo

The Internet is a black hole for strange, weird and wonderful things—especially when it comes to food. Rather than dive in yourself, let F&W do it for you. Here, four of the most absurd food items we saw this week.

Japan’s Wild World of Weird Ice Creams: Get Ben and/or Jerry on the phone; there are some new flavors they have to hear about. In Japan, you can find novelty ice creams including viper, squid ink and raw horse—with real chunks of raw horse! Also available: soy sauce, shark fin, sea urchin, cow tongue and salad—which includes slices of bell pepper and cucumber.

Jelly Belly Beer: Perfect for beer-curious kid, Jelly Belly’s newest flavor is draft beer. Apparently, customers have been demanding a beer-flavored jelly bean for years. The iridescent gold candies were inspired by German hefeweizen—but they do not contain actual beer. These would pair well with the company’s buttered popcorn flavor.

Rent the Wienermobile: What do a Ferrari and the Wienermobile have in common? Driving either one will get you noticed. If that’s all you want from a car, the Oscar Mayer Wienermobile is the way to go: It's more spacious than a Ferrari, and right now there's a chance to rent it for free. Win an 8-hour spin in a giant mobile hot dog by tweeting why you deserve to lease it with the hashtag #TWEET2LEASE.

Pizza Portraits: Subway claims that their employees are sandwich artists, but Nathan Wyburn is a true food artist. For their wedding, a U.K. couple recently commissioned him to paint their portraits on pizzas using sauce and toppings. The images on the pies are impressively realistic, which makes it all the more unsettling that they were served and eaten at the reception.

Bacon Balcony: In China, it’s not uncommon to see laundry hung out to dry on an apartment balcony. But one resident recently decided to use the space to cure a large quantity of pork. Pics of the urban pork belly are going viral in China, which may mean we’ll be seeing a lot more of this practice.
