Chris Shepherd of Houston's Underbelly has amazing insight on how wine pairs with food. Here, 7 of his top picks to drink now.

2012 Rafael Palacios Sábrego Godello ($15)
“I always think Spanish whites, like this citrusy Godello, offer great quality for the price. Anytime I’m having a party, I’ll pick up six bottles.”

2013 Miner Mendocino Rosato ($20)
“Miner’s always been one of my favorites. I buy this California rosé every year as soon as it comes out. It’s made with Sangiovese grapes, which give it an Italian feel.”

2012 Loimer Kamptal Grüner Veltliner ($22)
“Fred Loimer makes some of Austria’s best Grüners, even at the affordable level. This peppery bottling is regularly featured on the list at Underbelly.”

2013 Heidi SchrÖck Weissburgunder ($24)
Weissburgunder is the Austrian term for Pinot Blanc. Heidi Schröck’s lively version is one of my go-to summer wines—no question.”

2013 Müller-Catoir Haardt Scheurebe ($34)
“Müller-Catoir’s Rieslings are among my favorites, but I also like the winery’s Scheurebe, which is a little-known, grapefruity white variety. It’s incredibly minerally, without any of the petrol notes you sometimes get in Rieslings.”

2011 Domaine Tempier Bandol Rouge ($44)
“I had this funky red at my own restaurant recently, when Jose Enrique [F&W Best New Chef 2013] was in town. I love its rustic earthiness—it’s perfect for roasted and braised meats.”

2011 Soter Mineral Springs Ranch Pinot Noir ($55)
“My life-changing wine was a bottle of 1998 Soter Pinot—I tasted it and realized, This is why I love wine. It just perfectly captures where it’s from, that Oregon terroir. So if there’s a bottle of Soter anywhere near me, I’m going to drink it. Plus, Soter’s sparkling wine is one of the only ones I really like.”
