The Internet is a black hole for strange, weird and wonderful things—especially when it comes to food. Rather than dive in yourself, let F&W do it for you. Here, four of the most absurd food items we saw this week.
King Cake Burger: As if Mardi Gras wasn’t debaucherous enough, Food Drunk, a New Orleans food truck that serves dishes designed specifically for the inebriated, is offering a king cake burger. It is comprised of a Black Angus brisket patty and a slice of cheddar cheese on a sweet brioche bun frosted with icing and sprinkled with yellow, green and purple sugar crystals.
Chipotle Burrito Feat: Chipotle burritos are huge. Finishing just one in a lunch hour is impressive. So think about finishing four of them—plus a giant Diet Coke—in three minutes. Competitive eater Matt Stonie did just that with incredible (and somewhat alarming) ease. Amazingly, finishing the Diet Coke appeared to be the most difficult part. Brain freeze hurts.
The Ultimate Cat Café: Let us introduce you to the next generation of Japanese cat-themed cuisine: Restaurant Mon Petit. Named for Mon Petit cat food (Fancy Feast in the U.S.) the pop-up Tokyo restaurant offers a complete cat experience without any actual cats. There are cat food-inspired French dishes, servers dressed like cats and real time motion capture that turns diners into digital cats projected onto a screen.
Pizza Flambé: If you’re a budding pyromaniac with a pension for pizza, there’s a restaurant in Wisconsin that has your favorite new dish. Aspen Landing in Menasha is offering something called a volcano pizza. It’s a double-crusted pizza that comes topped with a pizza crust dome, which is doused with alcohol and ignited tableside. When the dome burns out, it is removed to reveal a normal pizza with up to three toppings. The dome is served alongside the pizza with marinara dipping sauce.
Ramen Taco: Now that the ramen burger has taken off, it’s time for a new ramen hybrid food. The Vulgar Chef team has taken on the task and created the ramen taco, which uses the crunchy noodles as a shell. Apparently, the culinary world has given up on using ramen noodles to make ramen.
