Just Say No to Beaujolais Nouveau

Ever wondered where the experts stand on the best wine practices and controversies? In this series, wine blogger, teacher and author Tyler Colman (a. k. a. Dr. Vino) delivers a final judgement.

Don't you think great cru Beaujolais makes Beaujolais Nouveau seem like a pointless waste of money? Nouveau, which is made and released each fall after the harvest, typically comes from the region's less-desirable vineyards and is usually produced using industrial methods. Cru Beaujolais is a different story: It comes from the 10 top sites (crus) in the Beaujolais region, and most people making it treat their superior grapes with far more care. These wines are labeled by their appellation, such as Morgon, Juliénas or Fleurie. A few great producers to look for are Clos de la Roilette, Marcel Lapierre and Terres Dorées.
