Taste Test Tuesday

Best Greek Yogurt

Tasting Greek yogurt in the Food & Wine test kitchen.

Indulgently thick, with up to double the protein of traditional styles, Greek yogurt now rules the dairy aisle. With so many brands dabbling in the strained category, choosing one can seem daunting. Food & Wine sampled a heap of plain-flavored supermarket offerings that ranged from non to full-fat in order to find the most luscious, satisfyingly tangy options available.

GREEK YOGURT: FULL FAT

Most Luscious:
Fage Total Greek Yogurt $1.99/7 oz.
“This one is crème fraîche-like. Rich, luscious, good.” “Creamy, nicely balanced.” “I like when it has more tang, but this tastes indulgent.” “Creamy and mild.” "Ditto all on luscious!"

Good for Dessert:
The Greek Gods Traditional Plain Greek Yogurt $1.69/6 oz.
"Very nice flavor.” “Very creamy, not overly sour.” “This has a creamy sweetness. Would be good for dessert.” “Favorite.” “Like the flavor but the texture throws me. Like a yogurt-ricotta mash-up." “I like this—it's different."

Best Sour Cream Substitute:
Cabot Greek Style Yogurt $5.99/2 lbs

Sour, but super creamy!!! Yum.” “A little too funky for me.” “Aftertaste is more lemony.” “Has a real funky, goat-y quality. Great texture. I like it—it has character.” “Super sour—tastes like the real deal! Good as a nutritionally dense sour cream substitute.”

GREEK YOGURT: 2% FAT

Best in Category:
Wallaby Organic Greek Plain Lowfat Yogurt $1.39/6 oz.
“I like this a lot. Good sour/creamy balance.” "This one is yummy." “A tiny bit barn-y in a nice way. Nice creaminess.” "A top pick!”

Reduced-Fat Sour Cream Sub:
Trader Joe's Greek Syle 2% Lowfat Plain Yogurt $1.49/ 7 oz.

“Good tang and creaminess, but I don't love the flavor.” “This tastes like sour cream—I like it!” “ I don't mind this one—I think it's a safe pick.”

Misplaced Indulgence:
Fage Total 2% $1.99/7 oz
.
“Slightly rich—but doesn't feel that indulgent.” “Too thick and bland for me—I miss the acid.” “Mild, tangy and very creamy. To me, this tastes the same as the 0%, so why go for the 2%?”

GREEK YOGURT: NON-FAT

Best in Category:
Fage Total 0% $1.99/7 oz.

“I like this a lot for 0%.” "Best 0%" “Very mild.” “Perfection. So good.” “Too thick and bland for me—I like tang!”

Bargain Alternative:
America’s Choice All Natural Greek Nonfat Yogurt $0.95/6 oz.

“Average.” “A bit thin tasting.” “I'd use this as an ingredient, but it’s too flavorless as a yogurt meal.”“ Fine—especially for the price point.” “Could it be that this is lacking salt?”

Enduring Tang:
Trader Joe's Greek Style Nonfat Plain Yogurt $1.49/6 oz.

“Good! Nice tang and thickness. The tang stays with you—I like it!”“ A bit too much bite for my taste.” “Bitter tanginess. I don't love this.” “I don't like how it coats the mouth.”
