This Saturday, November 24, marks the third annual Small Business Saturday. Nestled between Black Friday and Cyber Monday, the American Express-launched event encourages shoppers to buy from local companies and eat at independently-owned restaurants. It’s a great excuse to get an early start on holiday shopping while supporting the community, especially in the Northeast where the effects of Hurricane Sandy are still being felt.

Here, some of F&W editor's favorite gifts from small businesses across the U.S.

Half Moon Orchard Gin The Hudson Valley’s Tuthilltown Spirits uses local wheat and apples—sourced from less than 15 miles away—to create its round, smooth and slightly sweet gin. $37; bottlerocketwine.com.

Salt and Straw Ice Cream In Portland, OR, Kim Malek and her cousin Tyler Malek run Salt and Straw, a small batch ice cream company that uses only locally-produced, sustainable and organic ingredients. Dessert-inspired flavors like cheddar-apple pie or almond brittle can be shipped in gift packs. $65 for 5 pints; saltandstraw.com.

Mason Jar Shaker Eric Prum and Joshua Williams (a.k.a W&P Design) were inspired by Brooklyn cocktail culture and their Southern roots to create the Mason Shaker, a brilliant cocktail shaker made from a ubiquitous canning jar. $29; westelm.com.

Matt’s Coffee The organic coffee company roasts its beans using a vintage roasterthat runs on local fruitwood from Maine. The process makes for a smooth and aromatic brew. $11.50 for 12 oz; mattscoffee.com.

Béquet Caramel Made in Montanta by artisan caramel maker Robin Béquet, the small-batch gooey candies come in variety of flavors including Celtic sea salt, chipotle and the perfect seasonal flavor: green apple. From $6.25 for 4 oz; bequetconfections.com.
