Editor Picks: What to Drink on Memorial Day

Chilled rosés, crisp pilsners and refreshing cocktails are among F&W editors' top picks for outdoor parties over the long weekend.

Best Cocktail: Mojito
“It's such a great spring/summer drink. The tangy lime, the fragrant mint—it's so superrefreshing. The ingredients are all easy to find—you just need white rum and club soda (plus mint and lime), and then you can make one of those instant simple syrups with quick dissolving sugar, and you're set. It's an all around great party drink: simple, pretty. It's good for daytime; it's fun at night!”—Kate Krader, Restaurant Editor and Editor of Food & Wine Cocktails 2012

Best Wine: Rosé
“This Memorial Day I'm hoping I'll end up somewhere outside. And regardless of what food's being served, if it's springtime weather and the sun is out and I'm lounging around in a grassy field or on a beach or what-have-you, I hope I'll be drinking dry rosé (ideally from the south of France). Some of my favorites are Commanderie de la Bargemone, Commanderie de Peyrassol, Mas Carlot and Domaine Tempier.”—Ray Isle, Executive Wine Editor

“I'm a little bit of a rosé freak all year long, but Memorial Day is when it starts to feel really weather appropriate. This year I'll chill down a couple of bottles, like the 2011 Edmunds St. John Bone Jolly from California and the 2011 Benard Baudry Chinon from the Loire, to have with some grilled fish.”—Megan Krigbaum, Associate Wine Editor

Best Beer: Pilsner
“When the weather gets warm, I drink pilsner. These lagers are typically lean and dry in a way that contrasts well with the meaty, sweet-smoky grilled foods that dominate at cookouts and beer gardens. The best ones have hoppy bitterness that's prominent but not overwhelming, and they drink well at rather cold temperatures. It's a Czech style of beer, but my go-to bottlings come from American breweries. Favorites: Victory Prima Pils, Troegs Sunshine Pils, Brooklyn Pilsner.”—Lawrence Marcus, Senior Digital Editor

Best Nonalcoholic Pick: Agua Fresca
“I'll be in the home stretch of my pregnancy, so I'll skip the booze and make something like this agua fresca using local strawberries (and maybe not-quite-yet-local watermelon). Seems perfect for welcoming summer.”—Kristin Donnelly, Senior Food Editor
