Eco-citizen Marshall Dostal had been scavenging grease from L.A.’s top restaurants for more than four years, turning it into clean-burning bio-diesel for his Mercedes 300D. He and his wife, Megan, recently took things one step further by converting the leftover glycerin (a by-product of the biofuel distillation process) into a bergamot-oil-infused, super-foamy soap called Further.
Some restaurants are even transforming their reformulated grease into hand soap for their bathrooms. Mario Batali is the latest chef bringing his grease full circle: He recently arranged for Dostal to cart away 1,600 gallons of gourmet grease from his restaurants Osteria Mozza and Pizzeria Mozza each month. The Mozza-grease soap will go back to the restaurants' bathrooms, and what’s left can be purchased here.
Dostal plans to launch a lotion, body wash, shampoo and conditioner as well.
