A few tips from chef Paul Bertolli, who designed the kitchen on these pages.
Ventilation
Ventilation is always an issue when installing a kitchen, even an outdoor one. Don't place the kitchen next to a high wall that will push smoke back toward cooks or diners.
Counters
Choose materials with a smooth surface, like the cast concrete Bertolli chose for the Kramlichs' counters. Avoid terra-cotta tile, which has grout lines that are virtually impossible to keep clean.
Oven
A wood-burning oven can be an extremely versatile part of an outdoor kitchen. Bertolli recommends the Valoriani (www.mugnaini.com).
Sink
A sink with running water is essential. The Kramlichs' faucet was made by Chicago Faucets (847-803-5000 or www.chicagofaucets.com). Small, wall-mounted water heaters are available from Low Energy Systems (800-873-3507).
Fridge
Bertolli selected an undercounter fridge from Silver King (800-328-3329 or www.silverking.com).
