Although the weather in 2000 was highly variable in France (great in Bordeaux, bad in Burgundy and the Loire), Beaujolais produced wines that were even better than the well-received 1999s. The new vintage will be arriving in wine shops this spring. Some names to watch for:
Jean Foillard
The intense Morgon "Côte de Py."
Domaine de la Grand Cour
The floral Fleurie Cuvée Vieilles Vignes.
Domaine du Vissoux
The cherry-ish Fleurie "Les Garants" and concentrated, chocolaty, Moulin-à-Vent Rochegrès.
Jean-Paul Thevenet
The intense, dark and plummy Morgon Vielles Vignes.
Georges Descombes
The banana-ish Brouilly and strawberry-ish Chiroubles.
Georges Duboeuf
The Brouilly Château de Pierreux, packed with vibrant berry fruit; the best of the wines from "the King of Beaujolais."
