Gottwald's Ships Inn (13 Fair St.; 508-228-0040) isn't the only place to find exemplary food on Nantucket. Some other top choices:
Daily Breads Bakery You'll sample Jeff and Shari Dutton's organic breads at the island's best restaurants, but it's worth the short bike ride from town to get them fresh from the hearth. (147 Lower Orange St.; 508-228-8961.)
Kendrick's at the Quaker House Inn Kendrick Anderson works in the island's smallest kitchen to turn out a wide variety of dishes: gravlax shares the menu with rack of lamb and Thai spiced mussels. (5 Chestnut St.; 508-228-9156.)
Oran Mor Chef-owner Peter Wallace and sous-chef James Trond opened this wonderful restaurant just last season and have already hit their stride. Try the grilled Arctic char, served with local oysters and seaweed in a ginger-Mirin broth. (2 S. Beach St.; 508-228-8655.)
Topper's at The Wauwinet Inn Christopher Freeman pairs poached monkfish with calamari in a tomato-fennel broth, lobster with crabcakes, yellowfin carpaccio with soba noodles. (120 Wauwinet Rd.; 800-426-8718 or 508-228-0145.)
