Arn Rasker, owner of ReNové, the builder and contractor for the Raccuglias' home, offers these tips for building an eco-friendly house:
1. Use recycled materials. The Raccuglias used commercial storefront windows with aluminum frames made from recycled cans.
2. Use natural materials. The floor varnish was made from oil from the seeds of the tung tree.
3. Conserve energy. The Raccuglias installed in-floor radiant heating so that temperatures can be set lower without sacrificing comfort.
4. Do your research. Rasker recommends The New Natural House Book: Creating a Healthy, Harmonious, and Ecologically Sound Home by David Pearson.
