The port industry is based in Vila Nova de Gaia, a short walk across the Douro River from Oporto. Many of the lodges (maturation cellars) are open to visitors. One must-see is Taylor Fladgate, which also has a good restaurant; in fact, its Portuguese cuisine, influenced by international style, is prepared by chefs who trained with those who cook for the family at Vargellas (250 Rua do Choupelo; 011-351-22-374-2800). Another good bet is D. Tonho, a favorite of the port trade. Located on Oporto's waterside, it specializes in local dishes like kid-goat stew (13-15 Cais da Ribeira; 011-351-22-200-4307). In Oporto, stay at the five-star Infante de Sagre hotel, built by a local textile magnate, which has a slightly offbeat, baronial ambience (62 Praça D. Filipa de Lencastre; 011-351-22-339-8500).
