Apart from being celebrated for its produce and specialty foods, Kangaroo Island is one of the best places to observe some of Australia's wildlife in a natural setting.
Getting there
From Sydney or Melbourne, take one of the many daily flights to Adelaide. Rent a car at the airport and drive to Cape Jervis, 90 minutes south, to catch a ferry to Kangaroo Island.
Where to stay
Since Kangaroo Island has no large hotels or resorts, tourism is pleasantly low-key. Most visitors stay at the island's many bed-and-breakfasts. Both the Stranraer Homestead (011-61-8-8553-8235) and 17 Esplanade (011-61-8-8553-2494) offer comfortable guest rooms and meals featuring local ingredients.
What to look for
At Flinders Chase National Park, which encompasses the entire western end of the island, you can find koalas, wallabies, the occasional platypus and, naturally, kangaroos. Sea lions and penguins are plentiful.
