The Long Island Wine Council is a good source of information on visiting vineyards (631-369-5887). David Page and Barbara Shinn of Shinn Vineyards (2000 Oregon Rd., Mattituck; 631-765-1244) list a few favorites; you'll want to plan ahead, since most are open by appointment only.
Bedell Cellars Winemaker Kip Bedell, known locally as Mr. Merlot, also produces a lovely Viognier (36225 Main Rd., Cutchogue; 631-734-7537).
Jamesport Vineyards The wines here include Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Merlot (Rte. 25, Main Rd., Jamesport; 631-722-5256).
Lenz Winery Lenz makes everything from sparkling wine to Gewürztraminer, Chardonnay and Merlot; its winemaker, Eric Fry, will be consulting winemaker for Shinn Vineyards (Rte. 25, Main Rd., Peconic; 631-734-6010).
Schneider Vineyards This Cabernet Franc specialist also produces Chardonnay and Merlot (2248 Roanoke Ave., Riverhead; 631-727-3334).
Wölffer Estate The sparkling wine and Chardonnay are standouts (on the South Fork, 139 Sagg Rd., Sagaponack; 631-537-5106).
