A few other great restaurants to look for in this food-obsessed city: Flower Drum (17 Market Lane; 011-613-9662-3655) is arguably the best Chinese restaurant in town. A vast chinoiserie-decorated space, Flower Drum offers exceptional Cantonese cuisine and a fabulous wine list. It's a toss up here between the Van Haandel brothers' well established Stokehouse (30 Jacka Blvd., St. Kilda; 011-613-9525-5555) and their Circa (2 Acland St., St. Kilda; 011-613-9534-5033) in the dazzling new Prince hotel. If it's great sea views, style and buzz you want, go for Stokehouse, with its broad-ranging menu, but if it's a British chef with three-star Michelin training or fabulous decor that inspires, reserve at Circa. At the base of The George hotel (where Strode lives) sits The Melbourne Wine Room (125 Fitzroy St., St. Kilda; 011-613-9525-5599), a noisy, buzzy bar and dining room that offers a fantastic range of wines from Victoria as accompaniment to modern Mediterranean-inspired cuisine. Langton's (61 Flinders Lane; 011-613-9663-0222)is a casual-chic wine bar and restaurant in the base of an old newspaper building. A must for great wine and for Philippe Mouchel's fine French food.
