LeWitt works with Fratelli Mari, one of the oldest studios in Deruta, primarily on large decorative pieces. There, much like scenes pictured in 16th-century engravings found in Deruta's ceramics museum, men sit at pottery wheels and draw vases up out of lumps of Umbrian forest clay. Turning out the pots has been considered a man's job since the 13th century. Women clean the freshly made pots with water, smoothing them with their hands. They then press handles on the pieces. Attaching handles to pitchers and cups is traditionally women's work because, as Derutans say, it requires delicacy and patience rather than strength. After that, the pieces are baked in a kiln to become bisqueware. (Via Circonvallazione Nord 1, Deruta, Umbria; 011-39-075-9710400)
