Best known for its precipitous roads and panoramic Mediterranean views, the 30-mile-long Amalfi Coast is definitely worth the trip. Getting there By car the Amalfi Coast is 3 1/2 hours from Rome and 1 1/2 hours from Naples. The towns of Positano and Amalfi can be reached by hydrofoil from Naples. Where to stay Hotel San Pietro (2 Via Laurito, Positano; 011-39-0-89-875-455) plays host to the rich and famous. Slightly more modest is Le Sirenuse Hotel (30 Via Cristoforo, Positano; 011-39-0-89-875-066), where rooms have terraces with views of Positano and its majolica-domed Church of Santa Maria Assunta. Where to eat Don Alfonso 1890 (11 Corso Santz'Agata, Sant'Agata sui Due Golfi; 011-39-0-81-878-0026) offers a seasonal degustation menu. It also sells house-made limoncello and preserves by mail order. Taverna del Capitano (Marina del Cantone, Massa Lubrense; 011-39-0-81-808-1028), on its own private beach, serves the freshest local seafood. Trattoria da Gemma (9 Via Fra'Gerardo Sasso, Amalfi; 011-39-0-89-871-345) specializes in simple but delicious dishes like zuppa di pesce and crostata. --Lily Barberio
