Flying to Africa One of the best ways to get to southern Africa is to take Virgin Atlantic from New York City to Johannesburg via London, as Pépin did. ("The best transatlantic flight I've ever taken," he says.) Round-trip airfare begins at about $2,000 for Economy and $6,500 for Upper Class (800-862-8621). With so much going on in London these days, you might want to extend your stopover into a mini vacation.
Exploring Africa An outfit that's called Explore (888-LYONESS or exploreafrica.net) customizes trips throughout the continent. An itinerary similar to Pépin's, with three nights each at San Camp (or its sister camp, Jack's) and Tongabezi, plus three nights at Chief's Camp in the Okavango Delta of Botswana, is $4,195, including transfers, charter flights, lodging and meals, but not including international flights or commercial flights within Africa.
