Three Great Home Brews
Don Feinberg and Wendy Littlefield, who've imported Duvel to America for nearly two decades, love Belgian beer so much that they launched their own Belgian-style brewery in 1997. Their Brewery Ommegang, in Cooperstown, New York, makes three beers. Ommegang is a deep-chestnut-hued brew that owes its complexity to aging inside the bottle with the yeast. Subtle hints of anise and other spices add depth to the roasted flavor of the malt. Hennepin has a cloudy appearance and a rich golden color typical of the farmhouse beers in southern Belgium. It is lighter in texture, with a sweet malt flavor and a slight ginger tang. Rare Vos is an amber beer with hints of caramel flavor made in a style indigenous to the Brabant region of Belgium.
