Getting There
Mountain Travel Sobek offers seven trips to Ecuador this year; the next departs from Quito on May 19 ($2,390 not including flights; 888-687-6235). MTS can arrange air travel.
What to Bring
When packing, bear in mind that temperatures in the Sierra region vary widely and drop to near freezing at night. The rainy season runs from September to January, so bring waterproof hiking clothes, such as those sold by Eastern Mountain Sports (888-463-6367). Hair dryers and other appliances will run without adaptors on the electrical outlets at all haciendas on the MTS trip.
Shopping Tips
Last year, Ecuador adopted the dollar as its official currency. Take clean, undamaged bills, and include small denominations. Handwoven blankets, bedspreads, rugs and shawls make great purchases, as do silver, amber and semiprecious-stone jewelry, and the only genuine Panama hats, made in the town of Montecristi.
