Traditional Hotel Krone, set in the middle of a historic village, has a highly reputed restaurant serving French- and Italian-accented cuisine (62 Hauptstrasse, Herxheim-Hayna; 011-49-7276-50-80; doubles from $90). Hotel Sonnenhof, an Art Nouveau villa, is one of the Pfalz's most beautiful hotels (2 Mühlweg, Siebeldingen; 011-49-6345-33-11; doubles from $58).
Where To Eat
Grand Cru is the best new Pfalz restaurant, where chef Stefan Stiller melds contemporary French and Asian flavors (31 Weinstrasse, Deidesheim; 011-49-6326-96-600). Weinkastel, located in a gabled, half-timbered house next to the Koehler-Ruprecht estate, is known for its Saumagen, pig's stomach stuffed with pork, potatoes and spices (80 Weinstrasse, Kallstadt; 011-49-6322-50-33).
Where To Taste Wine
Most Pfalz tasting rooms are open Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., closing midday for two hours. J. L. Wolf, in addition to impressive Rieslings, makes excellent Pinot Noirs and dry Pinot Gris. The Italianate villa has just been restored (1 Weinstrasse, Wachenheim; 011-49-6322-98-97-95). Koehler-Ruprecht produces outstanding dry whites that are excellent values (84 Weinstrasse, Kallstadt; 011-49-6322-18-29). Rebholz offers a wide range of wines, including a remarkable Pinot Noir (54 Weinstrasse, Siebeldingen; 011-49-6345-34-39).
