According to German winemakers, the 2001 vintage is one of best in decades; some have called it as good as the legendary 1976.
2001 Franz Künstler Hölle Spätlese Trocken ($43) A lovely, light, lemony wine with terrific acidity and a dry finish. Proof that Germany can turn out top dry-style Rieslings.
2001 Robert Weil Kiedricher Gräfenberg Erstes Gewächs ($43) This is the first vintage for which Weil has employed the "Erstes Gewächs" (first growth) designation. Very pure, clean fruit flavors that are more pear than lemon, with a memorably penetrating mineral style and a dry finish.
2001 Kerpen Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spätlese ($23) Although this wine is high in residual sugar, it's not cloyingly sweet, thanks to good acidity and a firm mineral character that balances delicate fruit flavors of pear and white peach. Most impressive of all, however, is its long, rich, powerful finish.
2001 Dr. L Riesling QbA ($10) This wine has to be one of the best deals in Mosel Riesling. Ernst Loosen's "introductory" Riesling is marked by flavors of fresh peach and apricot, balanced by a fair amount of refreshing acidity. A great aperitif.
