Although Vega Sicilia has long reigned supreme in Ribera del Duero, other well-known names in the region include:
Alion Vega Sicilia's ultramodern sibling turns out an impressively concentrated barrique-aged reserva red.
Bodegas Emilio Moro This winery has been around almost as long as Vega Sicilia (120 years). Their 1998 ($20) is surprisingly full-bodied and completely delicious.
Pesquera Probably the second most famous name in Ribera, although some recent vintages have been disappointing.
Pingus Created by the Danish interloper Peter Sissek in 1995, Pingus is currently the most expensive wine in Spain (debuting at over $300 a bottle). A second, more affordable label is Flor de Pingus (about $40).
