1. The Culinary Institute of America offers a free (yes, free) introductory course, called "A Taste of Wine Online," at ciaprochef.com. It covers three grape varieties—Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah—and delivers a lot of useful general information, plus it's easy to navigate.

2. Check out localwineevents.com. It lists wine classes and free tastings throughout the country.

3. New York's International Wine Center, a top-notch school, provides home-study courses using the same materials as their on-site classes, supplemented by lists of recommended wines to taste, at internationalwinecenter.com.
