Beyond Gatorade
A protein-rich smoothie before a workout will increase your energy, and a tall, cold glass of minty lemonade after a workout will help to quench your thirst.
Peanut-Butter Banana Smoothie Blend
1 banana with 2 spoonfuls of smooth peanut butter, 2 cups of apple or orange juice, 1/2 cup of plain nonfat yogurt and 1/2 cup of ice. Drink immediately.
Ginger Mint Lemonade
In a medium saucepan, mix 2 cups of water with 1 cup of sugar and a 2-inch piece of fresh ginger, thinly sliced. Bring to a simmer and add 1 cup of fresh mint leaves. Remove from the heat and let stand for 1 to 12 hours; strain and cool. To serve, mix 1/4 cup of the syrup with 1/4 cup of fresh lemon juice and 3/4 cup of cold water and stir to combine. Serve over crushed ice. (The syrup can be refrigerated for up to 1 week.)
