It’s worth a trip to Palermo to visit this magnificent opera house, particularly when Cavalleria Rusticana (the opera Michael Corleone watched in The Godfather III) opens April 14 (Piazza G. Verdi; 011-39-091-605-3111 or teatromassimo.it).
Antica Focacceria S. Francesco
This three-level restaurant (casual food on the bottom, fine dining at the top) is one of the oldest in Palermo. The food’s good, albeit rustic, and the wine list is very reasonably priced (Via Paternostro 58; 011-39-091-320-264 or afsf.it).
Excelsior Palace Hotel
The rooms are well-appointed and breakfast is included (doubles from $244; Via Marchese Ugo 3; 011-39-091-7909 or excelsiorpalermo.it).
Tasca d’Almerita
About an hour and a half from Palermo, Tasca d’Almerita is one of the most beautiful wineries in Sicily (tascadalmerita.it).
