More Great Greeks
Other Greek winemakers offer first-rate bottles at very fair prices. These are four standouts. All are distributed by Nestor Imports, 212-267-1133.
1995 Kouros Nemea ($8) One of Greece's most famous reds. Fairly rich and full-bodied, made from Agiorgitiko grapes. Similar to Sangiovese in style and substance.
1996 Kouros Patras ($8) A crisp, refreshing white with hints of melon. Like a Mediterranean Sauvignon Blanc with a nose reminiscent of a Viognier.
1994 Antonopoulos Vineyards Cabernet Nea Dris ($13) The outstanding result of Old World winemaking techniques used with "international" grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Full-bodied with soft tannins and lush berry and plum flavors.
1995 Amethystos Red ($15) A reasonably light-bodied red with appealing Gamay-like ripe cherry flavors and a fairly high level of acidity that can counter fattier foods.
