Here, a few of Diane Johnson's favorite restaurants in Paris.
Chez René This old bistro near the Sorbonne always feels like the right place at the right time. Good coq au vin and amazing baba au rhum with a snifter of rum on the side (14 blvd. St. Germain; 011-33-1-43-54-30-23).
Dédicace Café This somewhat trendily decorated St. Germain des Prés spot is warm and welcoming, with updated brasserie classics such as warm brioche with fresh chanterelles (7 rue St. Benoît; 011-33-1-42-61-12-70).
Emporio Armani Café A popular, central meeting place for fashionable Parisians, with good, basic Italian foodsalads, pastas and risottos. Fun for lunch (23 blvd. de la Madeleine; 011-33-1-45-48-62-15).
Macéo Near the Palais Royal, this sister to Willi's Wine Bar is practically a neighborhood clubhouse. The food is Mediterranean, with some Californian influences (15 rue des Petits-Champs; 011-33-1-42-97-53-85).
