2001 Rubicon ($100) The flagship of the Coppola empire, this Bordeaux-style
blend (nearly 90 percent Cabernet Sauvignon) is a big, rich and most impressive wine that’s
also surprisingly accessible, thanks to its fine-grained tannins.
2003 Edizione Pennino Zinfandel ($38) Made from some of the oldest vines
at the Rubicon estate (most are at least 28 years old), this dense, deliciously spicy Zin
is an homage to Coppola’s
maternal grandfather, Francesco Pennino, a music publisher.
2003 Rubicon Estate Cabernet Franc ($44) Although Cabernet Franc is traditionally
blended with Cabernet Sauvignon, the quality of the 2003 fruit was so high (all from the estate)
that winemaker Scott McLeod decided to bottle this chocolaty Cab Franc on its own.
2004 Francis Coppola Presents Rosso Classic ($10) This blend of Zinfandel,
Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah is soft and appealing. It’s
the sort of good "everyday" wine
that Coppola’s
"Uncle Mikey" (who’s
noted on the bottle’s
back label) would surely like.
2004 Blancaneaux ($40) Sharing its name with one of the two Coppola resorts
in Belize, this exotic white is a blend of estate-grown Roussanne, Viognier and Marsanne.
While its tropical aromas are typical of Viognier, in the mouth it’s
all about pure minerality.
