It goes without saying that adults should closely supervise children in the kitchen. Here, a few more tips from Gale Gand:
1. When children are ready, teach them safety basics "If there's a pot with something hot on the stove, I've shown Gio how to lift the back of the lid first, so the steam will escape away from his face," Gand says.
2. Develop children's knife skills slowly When they're mature enough to start using knives, have them practice cutting soft foods first: the inside of a watermelon, zucchini, mozzarella.
3. Don't give children round vegetables to cut Always slice them in half first so they sit flat on the cutting board and won't roll.
4. Prevent spills Use high-walled mixing bowls, and keep them from sliding around by placing wet tea towels underneath.
5. Provide small utensils Kids will have more fun cookingand avoid mishapswhen they're using spatulas, spoons and whisks that they can hold comfortably in their hands.
