Michel Chapoutier has recently released two lines of Provençal wines: Domaine des Béates, his proprietary wines, and the less expensive Les Béatines, made from purchased grapes.
1997 Domaine des Béates Rouge
($18). A suave red blend that's warm, fragrant and spicy, with soft tannins and appealing black-cherry flavors.
1998 Domaine des Béates Rosé
($18). Anyone who thinks rosé is for sissies should try this big, deep grenadine-color rosé, which is a blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre. A virile wine that wears its weight well.
1998 Les Béatines Rouge
($12). A smooth, easy-drinking, medium- bodied red blend of Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre and Cabernet Sauvignon.
1999 Les Béatines Blanc
($12). Fragrant, with light peach and bitter-almond notes, a fresh and vigorous white that is an excellent aperitif.
1999 Les Béatines Rosé
($12). A bone-dry rosé, with appealing flavors of strawberry and bitter almond.
