Since the mid-'80s, partners and brothers Michael and Harmon Skurnik have distributed some of the greatest labels in the world: remarkable Champagnes from small French growers; fine German and Austrian bottles imported by Terry Theise; the amazing Australian selections of the Grateful Palate; the red-hot Italian selections exported by Marco de Grazia. And then there's the brothers' California list, which is like a big MGM production featuring every star in the heavens--Bryant, Marcassin and Williams-Selym, just for starters. "Michael got into the business first," Harmon says, succinctly explaining his absence from the company's name. Will that change now that the brothers split all the duties (tasting wines, visiting producers) equally? "I used to be in advertising," Harmon says mildly. "And in advertising the first rule of a successful brand is Don't change the name."
