Trekking Tips
To go on the tour described in this article, book a trip with Cox & Kings; the luxury outfitter, which was launched in India in 1758, has offices around the world. The company has been offering guided hikes to Machu Picchu, along the popular Inca Trail, since 1992. Inca Trail treks take four days and start at $3,485 per person. This year, Cox & Kings added two new treks. The first, the Ancascocha Trail tour, goes to Machu Picchu along a less-crowded route, lasts five days and starts at $2,650. The second, the Ausangate trek, takes hikers past remote lagoons and volcanic formations (but doesn't go to Machu Picchu), lasts seven days and starts at $3,450. Prices include food, equipment and lodging in tents and hotels, but not airfare. (For flights from the U.S., Cox & Kings recommends LAN PERU; 866-435-9526.)
