Stellenbosch is the name of one of South Africa's most prestigious wine regions, a scenic sprawl of green vineyards and mountain ranges. It's also the name of the charming 18th-century Cape Dutch settlement that is the region's principal town. The old whitewashed buildings at the wineries look very much like the beautiful, elaborately gabled houses on the town's oak-lined streets. At all 28 vineyards along the area's signposted wine route, you can taste such wines as Pinotage, a native varietal that's a cross between Cinsaut and Pinot Noir. To taste some of these wines at home, call the South African Wine Company, 800-504-9463--but since production is limited, so is availability.
