Founded in 1971 by eccentric, sometimes gruff brothers Stuart and Charles Smith, this winery encompasses some 200 secluded acres atop Spring Mountain. Large madrone trees can be found on the estate, giving the winery the second half of its name. While Stuart continues to manage the vineyards, the more vocal Charles personally pours guests through samples of the limited, estate-grown wines in their small, cluttered tasting room. Tastings and tours, while complimentary, are available by appointment only. A small picnic area with views of the mountain is also available to guests.
