Grouse Mountain
Vancouver's closest mountain for skiing and hiking sits eight miles north of Downtown, and it's open year-round. A modern tram brings visitors to the summit, some 3,700 feet above the city (be sure to bring your camera—the views are stunning in every season). In winter, the mountain opens its small, full-service ski resort with four lifts and 26 runs; in summer, visitors can hike, ride zip lines, and paraglide—or observe a pair of grizzlies that reside in a five-acre enclosed habitat. Hiking the mountain's 1.8-mile main trail is known as the Grouse Grind, and it's popular with Vancouverites—the tram fare is only $5 to come back down. A variety of food options, including a high-end restaurant, are available on top.
Insider Tip: Grouse Mountain is easily accessible from Downtown via public transit, using a combination of the SeaBus ferry from Downtown to North Vancouver's Lonsdale Quay and continuing with bus 236 from Lonsdale Quay to the Grouse tram. The entire trip should take about 37 minutes.
