Shangri La
Blending Hawaiian and Islamic architectural styles, Shangri La is a beachfront estate built in 1937 for Doris Duke, a wealthy American philanthropist. After helping with the design—which includes terraces, ocean views, and a central courtyard—Duke spent the rest of her life traveling the Middle East, Spain, and India, searching for eclectic art pieces to showcase in her mansion. Today, the collection consists of approximately 3,500 works, including 18th-century Indian enamels, Uzbekistani suzanis (brightly colored, embroidered textiles), and antique furniture dating back to the 1400’s. Estate tours begin at the nearby Honolulu Academy of Arts and last about 2½ hours.
