Teatro alla Scala

2 Via Filodrammatici
Milan , Italy

When it comes to opera, there’s no more respectable venue than “La Scala,” located a block north of the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II shopping mall. Opened in 1778 under the patronage of the Austrian empress Maria Theresa, the theater quickly became famous for its performers, acoustics, high society, and neoclassical design by architect Giuseppe Piermarini. Today it hosts up to 2,200 people, with the elegant red box seats spread over four levels most in demand. On stage, the world’s top artists perform more than 250 concerts, ballets, and operas each year.
