New World Symphony
Pass by the Lincoln Theater, home base for this internationally recognized symphony headed by founder and artistic director Michael Tilson Thomas, and you might hear one of the concerts, which are broadcast outside on speakers for people strolling by. Founded 20 years ago, the orchestra hosts full-orchestra concerts and small ensemble performances from October through May, all of which are piped out onto the street. It makes for interesting juxtapositions: on opening nights, formally dressed concertgoers walk out from a first-rate rendition of Robert Schumann's Piano Concerto to confront the nightly parade of rollerbladers, street performers, night-crawlers, and the general spectacle of Lincoln Road.
