Centrally located in Vienna's Innere Stadt district, the Wiener Staatsoper is one of the city's most photographed structures. Completed in 1869, the ornate opera house was designed in the Neo-Renaissance style with sweeping ceilings and gilded moldings. Immense crystal chandeliers and marble sculptures adorn the interior, where crowds gather for 200 performances throughout the year. Visitors are known to camp out en masse for sought-after seats; for those unlucky enough to snag even standing-room-only tickets (sold just before shows begin), large screens broadcast live opera footage outside.
