Powell's City of Books
Portland’s iconic, much-loved bookshop sprawls across nine cavernous rooms, taking up a full city block. From a merchandising perspective, Powell’s flies in the face of convention: used and new books are displayed side-by-side, so browsers might find a dog-eared 1930’s WPA guide to Oregon right next to shiny new travel titles; or early Grace Paley short stories adjacent to the latest novel by local Fight Club scribe Chuck Palahniuk. Many a local and visiting bibliophile has whiled away an entire rainy afternoon among the stacks.
