Thos. Moser Cabinetmakers

149 Main St.
Freeport , ME , United States http://www.thosmoser.com/

Internationally acclaimed master woodworker Thomas Moser—known for his exquisite Shaker, Colonial, and Arts and Crafts–style furniture made from American hardwoods—could open a store anywhere, but the longtime Maine resident chose Freeport’s main street for his flagship showroom. In a restored 19th-century house just two blocks north of L. L. Bean, the two-story space is more museum than shop, with Moser’s famous Windsor chairs, pencil post beds, and rockers all showcased in situ. Since he started building furniture in an old grange hall in New Gloucester, Maine, in the 1970s, Moser’s workshop has grown to employ 90-plus cabinetmakers and expanded to include more modern designs (see his Lolling line). His son David is continuing tradition with his own line of sculptural Asian-inspired chairs, tables, and sofas.

Insider Tip: Be sure to check the store’s (intriguingly named) “Special Opportunity Room” for reduced-priced floor samples, prototypes, and discontinued pieces. They ship—of course.
