Portland Saturday Market
On Saturdays—and, despite the name, Sundays from March through late December—the nation’s largest ongoing outdoor arts and crafts market unfolds beneath the Burnside Bridge (in 2009, the location will change). You’ll find artisans here selling beeswax candles, blown-glass hummingbird feeders, bamboo “saxaflutes,” papier-mâché face masks, hand-carved kitchen utensils, and plenty of other idiosyncratic knickknacks, curios, and housewares. Food vendors hawk everything from pierogi and falafel to organic coffee beans and home-baked peach cobbler; blues and folk bands entertain the crowds from a main stage. It all feels like a happy throwback to the early 1970’s, which is when the market first began.
