Paul Smith, Notting Hill

120 Kensington Park Rd.
London , England , United Kingdom
44 20 7229-8982

Britain’s best-known men’s wear designer is gregarious and charming, and his eccentricities manifest in discreetly peculiar and impeccably tailored clothing. Vividly printed silks line seemingly sober suits; shirt cuffs turn back to reveal naked ladies, swirly patterns, or his signature multicolored stripes. Smith made his name in sharp suits and shirts in early 70’s Nottingham (which led to his first Paris runway show in 1976), but now he also designs for women, children, and the home. A second London shop in Notting Hill is a delight: Smith’s personal touches—from artwork to the layout—plus clothing, toys, and furniture embellish a double-wide Victorian townhouse. (He often restores and covers furnishings with his own fabrics and creates rugs and cushions.) Climb to the top floor for congenial service in the new bespoke tailoring parlor (from $3,600, depending on fabric).
