Le Paingrüel is one of the most popular boulangeries in Quebec City. Located in the heart of the St.-Jean-Baptiste district, the bakery is housed in a red-brick building with a wood-and-glass storefront on the first floor. Inside, the shop contains exposed brick walls, a long wooden bar, and wicker baskets filled with freshly baked loaves of bread. Using old-fashioned artisanal methods and more than eight types of flour, Le Paingrüel bakes about 30 varieties of breads and pastries, including sourdough loaves, cranberry chocolate buns, and banana chocolate croissants. Arriving early is a must, as the fresh breads sell out quickly.
