Fortnum and Mason
For quintessentially English products (edible and non), head to this purveyor of high-quality provisions; it’s been in business for more than 300 years. Its historic building and always-impressive window displays are alone worth a visit, but so are dainty jars of orange marmalade and raspberry jam; painted metal tea caddies (choose English Breakfast, of course); ornate chocolates from Great Britain and beyond; Scottish all-butter shortbread biscuits presented in pretty tins; plus a host of other comestibles and drinkables including cheeses, olives, pâtés, pies, coffees, ports, and whiskeys. Though the shop also carries made-in-the-U.K. clothing, furniture, luggage, bath products, and stationery, the posh foodstuffs are the real draw. Pop in for tea and pastries at the chic Patio café (impeccable service, but alas, no outdoor seating).
